BoomWriter – an interactive website for kids to collaboratively write their own books!

As a Guest Author at I’ve written a beginning chapter called a “story start” which acts as a writing prompt for the class. Students write follow up chapters and anonymously submit their work online. Then the students vote for the submission they like best. The submission with the most votes becomes chapter two. The process begins again for chapter three and so on until the book is completed.

BoomWriter is an engaging creative writing website that encourages young people to read, write, and then assess what their peers write:

  • One chapter at a time the students write, read, and then vote on which of the submissions they like the most. The winning chapter is then added to the story and the process continues.
  • The end result is a complete, collaborative book.
  • BoomWriter features an appealing customizable cartoon avatar for each student to display his or her personality while writing anonymously. The peer evaluations of each of the chapters are therefore free of the influence of personalities, cliques, or collusion.
  • BoomWriter is extremely safe for students and Joy has used the site for her creative writing classes for kids in grades 4 to 6. The site is password protected for teachers and students, and only the teacher is able to have direct communication with the students (for the purpose of instruction). Students’ individual identities are protected by the avatar that they create, and this allows them to have a persona without compromising their identity. All student chapter submissions are screened by the teacher before being submitted for the peer voting process.
  • The completed book is then available for purchase on the BoomWriter website
  • BoomWriter also offers a monthly subscription to the Writing Club for kids not enrolled in a class
